Amber vs Clear Glass: Which Is Better for Skincare Packaging?
One of the most common questions we receive from skincare brands is whether to use amber or clear glass. Both have advantages, and the right choice depends entirely on your formula.
When to choose amber glass
Amber (brown) glass blocks 90%+ of UV light. Choose it for formulas containing:
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
- Retinol
- Essential oils
- Light-sensitive active ingredients
- Natural extracts
If your product degrades under light, amber is not optional — it is required.
When to choose clear glass
Clear glass lets the customer see the product color and texture. Choose it for:
- Serums with stable formulas
- Facial oils with a desirable color
- Toners and micellar water
- Products with a short shelf life (under 6 months)
The middle ground
Some brands use cobalt blue or green glass. It offers UV protection like amber but looks more modern on shelf.
Cost difference
Amber glass is usually 5-10% more expensive than clear. The cost is justified if your product is light-sensitive.
